Change not your garb at my going, Come just as you are on this day For the beckoning finger of heaven Directed me homeward that way. It gave me no time for a changing To finery which captures the eye But pointed me hurriedly heavenward To preview with rapture the sky. |
So come as you are as you journey, To pause and reflect for awhile That the best-fashioned dress in the chapel Shall soon lose its worth and its style; Its polished brass buttons or sequins May glisten with earth's fading light But soon the wearer must hasten To come with the angel of night. |
Come then as you are to the chapel, Learn there that the God of all love Has removed earthly clothes from my wardrobe And exchanged these with robes from above- With garments washed white at his bidding- With sandals to walk streets of gold- With a cross-exchanged crown and a scepter- While angels in wonder behold. |
When the time of our parting is over And the doors of the chapel do close Know well that my wish for your morrow Finds you glory-bound then with those Whose wardrobes are waiting in heaven- Whose works wove no robes-but afar Heard the voice of the life-giving Savior, "Come to me now as you are." |
